[Event] Philanthropy Promotion Through “Public Corner”
TV media has always been regarded as an effective tool in promoting philanthropy to the public. Utilising TV as promotional media has ensured philanthropy can be more easily and quickly spread. As such, PFI chose the medium of television to educate people about the values and development of philanthropy in Indonesia. Collaborating with Yayasan Sukam, PFI created a promotional and educational program for public consumption in a broadcast called “Public Corner”. Serving not only as an introduction to the public, this program also maps out Indonesian philanthropy and raises issues present within works being done by PFI members.
The program was routinely aired on Metro TV, the format being a talk show or discussion centred around various issues and themes relating to philanthropy. Some of the themes that had been aired were: Philanthropy and disaster relief, religious philanthropy, philanthropy and celebrities, diaspora philanthropy, as well as many others. The program invited guests from practitioners and observers who mostly came from PFI members. The program was aired live and contained an interactive segment, whereby TV viewers would have a chance to raise questions and receive real-time explanations from guest hosts. Throughout 2009 to 2011, the program broadcast 33 episodes, involving 50 institutions and 10 companies, with more than 60 guest hosts.
Unfortunately, the partnership had to end in 2012 due to a change in priority policy on Metro TV. PFI hopes that any other TV stations such as Kompas TV, Tempo TV, or TV One, concerned with the development of philanthropy in Indonesia may be willing to undertaken a similar project in the future.
